Aysgarth to Hawes – 3 September 2022

We only have two trips on the programme to the Yorkshire Dales this year. Our first trip was in July when we finished at West Burton on a very warm day. This time we are all going west to the finish at Hawes. The drop-off point for two routes is Aysgarth, which is just north of West Burton. We last visited Hawes in 2015 so it is quite some time since we have been in this part of the Dales.

The two routes getting off the coach at Aysgarth are the 10-mile and 11-mile routes. Once across the bridge over the River Ure at High Force, the two routes diverge. The 10-mile route follows the line of the disused railway as far as Nappa Mill then heads south of Askrigg. This route continues west as far as Sedbusk before going south and crossing the River Ure before coming into Hawes.

At Aysgarth, the 11-mile route heads north towards Carperby and then turns north-west to climb along the old Oxclose Road which once served as an access road for all the old lead mines that run along the hillside in this part of Wensleydale. The route drops down towards Newbiggin and goes to the north of Askrigg and finally heads west towards Sedbusk where it joins the 10-mile route into Hawes.

After the two routes have started their walks in Aysgarth the 11.5-mile route continues along the road for a short distance before getting off the coach at Ballowfield Bridge, After crossing the bridge this route follows a footpath along the River Ure and then uses the disused railway line as far as Nappa Mill where it crosses the river again at Worton Bridge. This route then heads west but turns south just before the village of Bainbridge to follow the River Bain to where it exits Semer Water. After crossing Semer Water Bridge the route heads down through Countersett and then along a short stretch of the Cam High Road before heading towards Burtersett and Gayle and into Hawes.

As this is our last visit to the Yorkshire Dales in 2022, you might want to join us for a walk, if so you can get in touch with us using the Contact Page of our website and you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPX routes here.
