Thropton to Clennell Hall – 25 November 2023

We have been to Clennell Hall a few times in the past. Usually, we have either started from the Hall or started from the Alwinton area and then walked into the Cheviots on the southeastern side. This time we are walking on the edge of the Cheviots and coming in from the direction of Thropton. The countryside in this area is a combination of farmland and open pasture. It is bounded on almost all sides by the Cheviots and the rolling hills north of Rothbury. Various small streams run south through this area heading down towards the River Coquet and an old Roman Road runs from southeast to northwest from Rochester on the A68 road towards Thunton Woods on the A697 road where it joins the main Roman Road called the Devil’s Causeway.

All three routes head roughly southeast to northwest through or along the edge of this area. The first route to start is the 10.5-mile route that starts between Rothbury and Thropton and goes alongside the River Coquet as far as Walton before turning northwest and heading towards the farming communities of Shaperton Edge and Well House before turning north to Newton and the finish.

Both the 9-mile and the 11.5-mile routes start from Thropton. The 9-mile route also heads along the river to Walton but then turns north to Burradon then west to Newton and continues west to the finish. The 11.5-mile route heads towards Caistron Lakes and then turns north to cross the River Coquet before turning northwest and paralleling the River Coquet on the high ground as far as Sharperton. It then joins the 10.5-mile route going north to Newton and Clennell Hall.

This will be our first time walking in this area so if you would like to take a walk on the edge of the Cheviots you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page. You can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
