Langdon Beck to Middleton-in-Teesdale – 2 September 2023
Two waterfalls, one river and a beck. The beck is called Harwood Beck but within one and a half miles from the start of the routes the beck reaches the River Tees as it comes from Cowgreen Reservoir to the west. The first waterfall we reach is High Force followed shortly after by Low Force and then it’s the River Tees all the way to the finish for two of the routes.
We have finished at Middleton-in-Teesdale a few times but it has been some time since we have followed the Pennine Way all the way from Langdon Beck. In fact, the last time was in 2006 when the routes came from Langdon Beck but finished in Romaldkirk which is some three miles southeast of Middleton-in-Teesdale.
This time, two of the routes start from Langdon Beck. The 11-mile route follows the Pennine Way beside the River Tees as far as the bridge to the south of Newbiggin. This route then climbs northeast over Hardberry Hill and down through the old mineworkings. The route then turns south and follows a footpath and minor road alongside Hudeshope Beck into Middleton-in-Teesdale. The other route starting at Langdon Beck is the 9-mile route and that is going to follow the Pennine Way all the way to the finish.
The third route is the 10.5-mile route which is going to start northwest of Langdon Beck and after just over 2 miles it crosses Harwood Beck and picks up the same route as the 9-mile route. All the routes pass by the two waterfalls along the Pennine Way.
Two waterfalls, one river and a beck, what more could you ask for on a day out? Perhaps some sunshine might be nice as well but rain or shine if you fancy a walk beside the river you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page. You can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.

As quite a few of the members of the club will be away on holiday in Majorca from the 10th to 17th September the walk on the 16th of September will not take place. However, that walk will now be scheduled for the 23rd September and the programme will pick up again on the 30th September.
