Cockburnspath to Eyemouth – 19 August 2023

This is the second of three walks along the coast that we have planned to do this year. Our first one was back in May when we walked from Runswick Bay to Saltburn on the North York Moors. Our last walk along the coast will be in December when we will be walking in Northumberland. This one is just across the border into Scotland and if the North York Moors coastline is dramatic the coastline between Cockburnspath and Eyemouth is definitely worth the journey.

As you drive north on the A1 the road passes through Berwick-on-Tweed and then a few miles down the road close to a place called Marshall Meadows you cross the border into Scotland. The next larger town after the border is Eyemouth but for many visitors using this route into Scotland, Eyemouth is just a name on a roadside sign as the A1 heads towards Edinburgh. Even the small village of Cockburnspath is missed from the A1 route and so unfortunately do the three planned routes.

Although the coach gets close to Cockburnspath the longest walk at 12 miles falls short by a few miles. To manage the three routes the coach is going to turn off the A1 and head towards the outskirts of Eyemouth on the A1107 road. As it passed through Coldingham the 9-mile route starts from there and heads towards Coldingham Lock and then to St Abbs Head. It is then on the Berwickshire Coastal Path heading back towards Eyemouth.

The 10-mile route starts further along the A1107 and uses what is known in Scotland as Core Paths to work across the countryside heading towards Coldingham Loch where it then follows the 9-mile route to Eyemouth

The 12-mile route starts some 4 miles from Cockburnspath and goes along a farm road called Dowlaw Road until it reaches the farm complex at Dowlaw and then heads towards St Abbs Head and follows the route of the other two walks.

On the approach to St Abbs Head the cliff top views are spectacular and from there you have the village of St Abbs to walk through and a possible ice cream stop at Coldingham Bay.
