Chop Gate to Helmsley – 3 August 2024
It’s the beginning of August and we are well into summer and we are going south to Helmsley in North Yorkshire. Helmsley is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park and the last time we were there was back in April 2019. We will be doing the drop-offs to the north of Helmsley shortly after we pass the village of Chop Gate and all the routes will be starting from various points along the B1257 road.
The first to start is the 11.5-mile route which moves across to the east and comes across Bilsdale East Moor and Helmsley Moor before continuing south through several woods to the finish. The second to start is the 10.5-mile route which goes west to pass through the small hamlet of Fangdale Beck and then goes back across the B1257 road to come over Laskill Pasture Moor and then south to Ayton Bank. This route then swings to the east to pick up the same route as the 11.5-mile walk.
The last to start is the 9.5-mile route which stays over to the west but comes south into Rye Dale and passes close to Rievaulx Abbey before heading east through the woods and into Helmsley.
There is a good choice of routes with different mileages but they all sort of go south to Helmsley. Which one do you want to do? You can get in touch with us from our Contact Page, you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
The image for this post was taken during one of the routes into Helmsley in April 2019. It looked like a wet spring that year but hopefully not wet at all for a Saturday in August.
