Great Ayton to Guisborough – 4 February 2023
Shiver me timbers, what do pies and Captain Cook have in common? Answer: They can both be found in Great Ayton.
Well, a statue of Captain Cook can be found, the man himself only went to school there, he lived on Aireyholme Farm about 1.5 miles from Great Ayton. The 10-mile route will pass close to the farm on their way to his monument on Easby Moor hopefully with backpacks filled with slowly cooling pies that have been recently purchased from Petch’s Pie Shop on the High Street in Great Ayton.
The 11-mile route heads up onto Roseberry Topping just after the start of their walk. Aireyholme Farm lies just to the southeast of this landmark and it’s a fair bet to say that Captain Cook must have climbed it many times in his younger days. Unfortunately, there may not be any pies in the backpacks for those on this route.
The 7.5-mile walk starts at Pinchinthorpe where there just happens to be a visitors centre. I wonder if they sell pies in their cafe? All the routes come together on the high ground of Guisborough Woods just to the south of Guisborough before making their way down into the town.
The last time we did these routes was in October 2018 but way back in 2013, we did the routes on the 2nd of February in the snow. This is when the image for this post was taken, some 10 years later and at the same time of year we are back again. Perhaps it might snow!
So if you fancy a hot pie, a good walk and maybe a shiver or two if it’s snowing you could join us for a walk. You can contact us using the form on the Contact Page and you can find the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
