Chesters to Twice Brewed – 1 April 2023

We have finished at Twice Brewed six times previously, the last time was in 2019. Each time at least one of the groups has walked alongside Hadrian’s Wall. Sometimes the other groups have walked in front of it and sometimes far to the rear of it, this might be one of the few times that we have followed it one after another.

This time each group is going to access the path alongside Hadrian’s Wall and walk along it until we reach the minor road leading down to the B6318 and the Twice Brewed pub. The 11.5-mile route is the first one to start at Walwick which is just to the west of Chesters. The 10-mile route is next and starts just west of Black Carts Farm and the 8.5-mile route is last to start from Brocolitia Roman Fort.

The first section of the route for all the groups is fairly easy with a gentle rolling landscape and not much of the Wall in sight mainly because a lot of it was used to build the Military Road, now known as the B6318, but from Sewing Shields Crags the remains of the Wall begin to take shape as the ground begins to climb. This is only a short section and the path soon begins to descend to Housesteads Roman Fort.

From here and for people who would like an easy section of walking there is a path south of the Wall that continues all the way to the minor road. For anyone that would like to keep close to the Wall then it’s one after another, up and down until we reach the famous tree at Steel Rigg and the last descent down Peel Crags.

If you would like to go one after another along one of the best sections of Hadrian’s Wall you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page, you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.

The images for this post were taken in February 2019, the last time we walked along Hadrian’s Wall.
