Cockermouth to Braithwaite – 5 August 2023
We have done routes from Braithwaite to Cockermouth in the past, the last time was in 2018. But this time it’s not quite Cockermouth because we are walking in the opposite direction. The last time we walked in this direction was way back in 2013.
The three routes we have planned are quite different and quite spaced out in relation to the finish. The first route to start is a 9-mile route that will get off the coach on the outskirts of Keswick and will go south through Portinscale and past the start of the route up to Catbells and then down into the Newlands Valley. After crossing Newlands Beck, the route climbs up and over Causey Pike and comes down via High Moss and Stile End to the finish in Braithwaite.
After travelling past Braithwaite on the A66 road and along the west side of Bassenthwaite Lake the next route to start is the 9.5-mile route which gets off the coach just as it turns west at the north end of Bassenthwaite Lake. This route goes around the north of the lake and then follows the Allerdale Ramble along the east side of the lake, through the wood below the small hill called Dodd and then across the River Derwent at High Stock Bridge. The route then heads south-west to Braithwaite.
The last route is also a 9.5-mile route and this starts not far from Cockermouth on the A66 road. This route comes south towards the cairn on Broom Fell and continues a climb to Lords Seat. From there it cuts across to the crop of rocks on Barf and then heads down Beckstones Gill to the minor road leading to Thornthwaite. Them route then goes south on minor roads, tracks and footpaths to the finish.
Although it’s not quite Cockermouth there are three completely different walks to choose from for this visit to the Lake District. If you would like to join us for a walk you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page. You can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
