Hallbankgate to Caste Carrock – 11 June 2022

This is on the programme with the start at Brampton but it is difficult to find a variety of routes leading south to Castle Carrock so our start point for two of the routes is from Hallbankgate on the A689 road. We have visited Castle Carrock three times in the past, in 2005, 2012 and 2016. In 2005 one of the routes went further south than this time around and ended up trying to cross a non-existent bridge called Old Water Bridge and ended up taking their boots off before crossing the stream. There are no wet feet today because we are not heading that way but you might note that when we have been that way on subsequent occasions we found that a bridge is now in place.

In actual fact, on the three previous occasions, we visited Castle Carrock we have started from Hallbankgate which is where the 9.5-mile and 11.5-mile routes start. Both routes are going in the same direction which takes them around Tindale Tarn and then southwest following a footpath that keeps close to the steep-sided fell that leads onto Cold Fell. At Garth Head, the 9.5-mile route heads west directly into Castle Carrock while the 11.5-mile route goes south and then back north along the east side of the reservoir.

The 11-mile route gets off the coach quite a distance from Hallbankgate at Coanwood and comes south, crossing Lambley Viaduct before walking along the A689 road before the route picks up a path along a disused railway and follows this as far as Tindale Tarn. From the Tarn, the route follows the same direction as the 9.5-mile route.

No wet feet today, unless we have heavy rain, so how about joining us for a walk? You can get in touch with us using the Contact Page of our website and you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPX routes here.
