Ribblehead to Hawes – 31 August 2024
In July last year, we set out to do these routes but by the time we reached the Yorkshire Dales, it was obvious that it was going to be a rainy day. Not just any rainy day but there were thunderstorms overhead. By the time we reached Leyburn, we had decided to change the planned routes and settled for just walking from Aysgarth to Hawes. We managed to miss most of the thunderstorms but there was still some heavy rain to contend with but by the time we reached Hawes the rain was beginning to ease off.
So we are hoping for no rain today as we try again to do these routes. We walked from Hawes to Ribblehead in 2006 but this is the first time we have walked in this direction.
There are two walks this time out, a route of 9.5 miles and one of 11.5 miles. The walks start on the B6255 close to Ribblehead Viaduct but turn away north towards Hawes. In this area, there are several popular walking routes, the Dales Way, the Pennine Way and the Ribble Way. The 9.5-mile route starts on the Ribble Way but then heads north on the Pennine Way. After 6 miles the route leaves the Pennine Way and uses an old track called the Cam Road and then a footpath into Hawes.
The 11.5-mile route uses both the Dales Way and the Ribble Way, as the Dales Way turns north the route joins the Ribble Way heading east. For the last part of this walk the route joins the Pennine Way which it stays on to Hawes.
So Dales Way, Ribble Way and Pennine Way you have a chance to walk along part of all of them if you fancy a finish at Hawes. You can get in touch with us from our Contact Page and you can download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
