Shap to Staveley – 20 August 2022
It’s a long way south for these routes on this trip out. This is probably our furthest southerly away trip, we have been to Tebay a few times but Tebay is over to the west of us this time around and a bit further north. We probably do not go to Staveley very often because it is further south. Our first visit was in 1997 and we were last there in 2004, so quite some time ago. We visited Shap recently when we finished in Pooley Bridge in May this year but we were all heading west on that day whereas this time around we are all going roughly south from Shap.
Both the 9.5-mile route and the 11.5-mile route start their walks from the same place a few miles south of Shap and they are both on the same path until they re-cross the A6 road at Leagate. Shortly after the 11.5-mile route turns east as far as Guestford before heading south while the 9.5-mile route continues in a southerly direction. Both routes connect with the Dales Way which will bring them into Staveley.
It seems odd to find the Dales Way heading across this part of the Lake District but the route starts in Ilkley in West Yorkshire and heads roughly northwest for 80 miles (128 km) to finish in Bowness on Windermere in Cumbria. This section of the route is roughly the last 10 to 12 miles before the finish.
The third route of 10.5- miles starts their walk on the A6 road close to Garnett Bridge. This route heads up the Longsleddale valley following the line of the River Sprint as far as Till’s Hole where it turns southeast to cross Green Quarter Fell and down into Staveley.
So if you fancy a trip to the south end of the Lake District and would like to join us for a walk you can get in touch with us using the Contact Page of our website and you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPX routes here.
