Garrigill to Dufton – 24 June 2023

Although this is on the programme as Garrigill to Dufton the start for at least one of the routes is Langdon Beck. The last time we did these routes was in 2014 so maybe it’s understandable that we got the start wrong after all that time. We have been to Dufton since 2014, we were there in 2017 but the planned routes then were circulars from Dufton.

These are routes that we do not get to do very often in a fairly remote area. We approach Dufton from the east, somewhat north of Middleton-in-Teesdale with all three routes using the Pennine Way to cross Dufton Fell and passing by the huge U-shaped valley of High Cup Nick before heading downhill into Dufton.

The 12.5 and 13.5-mile routes start on the B6277 road and head west along the Pennine Way close by a section of the River Tees as it comes out of Cow Green Reservoir. To get close to the bridge near Cow Green Dam, both routes must climb along a path over rocks that look down on the Cauldron Snout Waterfall. From here the routes head along the Pennine Way passing High Cup Nick on its northern side and then head downhill into Dufton.

The 10.5-mile route uses the coach to travel down to the parking area on the east side of Cow Green Reservoir. From there the route goes alongside the reservoir until it reaches the same bridge close to the dam that the other routes have used and follows the same route to Dufton.

If you would like to join us for a walk just remember it’s not Garrigill it’s Langdon Beck we are headed to and you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page. You can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
