Langholm Routes – 14 September 2024

It is only the second time we have been in Scotlands border country this year. We did Earlsdon to Melrose in July this year and are now back again to do some routes around Langholm. The last time we were in Langholm was way back in August 2019. There is some nice walking around Langholm, the hills are not too high and the views from the tops are really great.

The three routes we are planning to do are on three sides of Langholm, the 11.5-mile route is to the west of the town, the 9.5-mile route is to the east and the 10.5-mile route is to the north.

The first route to start is the 11.5-mile route which is getting dropped off on the A7 road leading into Langholm. This route initially goes south to Old Irvine and then starts to swing in a clockwise direction and then begins the first of five hills, the first one is called Calfield Rigg and the last is called Meikleholm Hill. While five hills may seem a lot they are all on one big curving ridge so it is not as bad as it sounds. The route comes down on the west side of Langholm and then it is a short walk to the finish.

The 9.5-mile route is second to start and the route begins in the centre of Langholm and crosses a footbridge over the River Esk to head south following the river before re-crossing the the river at Skipper’s Bridge. The route then goes anti-clockwise almost following the line of Tarras Water which flows south into the River Esk. As the route swings south it has the opportunity to visit the Malcolm Memorial on Whita Hill or to continue on a minor road directly into Langholm.

The last route to start is the 10.5-mile route that begins from the parking area just to the north of Langholm. This route starts by going north over three hills and then crosses the A7 road to the north of Langholm and then comes south over three more hills. Fortunately, the three hills to the west of the A7 are along a ridge as are the three hills to the east. The last hill is called Terrona Hill and the ridge comes down onto a minor road where this route also has the opportunity to visit the Malcolm Memorial on Whita Hill or continue into Langholm.

So which route are you going to do in border country? It does not matter too much which one you choose, they all good routes and all of them will have great views. You can get in touch with us from our Contact Page, you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.

The image for this post was taken in August 2019 when one of the routes did make it to the Malcolm Memorial at the top of Whita Hill. It was a hot day on that Saturday.
