Middleton-in-Teesdale to Bowes – 19 March 2022
These routes were originally planned as walk 7 on the 28th March 2020. Unfortunately, although we managed to do walk 6 to Alston the previous fortnight along came the pandemic and everything got cancelled. So here we are nearly two years later ready to have another go so it’s better late then never.
We have finished at Bowes a number of times over the years but usually, we start around Greta Bridge. The last time we started from Middleton-in-Teesdale was way back in 2003 so this is going to be a first for a lot of members.
The first route to start is the 10.5-mile route that is getting of in Middleton-in-Teesdale and walking south-east on the Tees Railway Path where it joins the 12.5-mile route which gets off next on the B6277 road. Both routes travel in the same direction south to the Hury Reservoir where they divide. The 12.5-mile route goes southwest passing Blackton Reservoir before turning south on a section of the Pennine Way and going underneath the A66 road before turning east on the Pennine Way into Bowes.
The 10.5-mile route, after passing Hurry Reservoir, keeps coming south following a different section of the Pennine Way all the way into Bowes. There is an 8-mile route that gets off the coach just north of Cotherstone on the B6277 road and heads south and then west until it reaches the same section of the Pennine Way as the 10.5-mile route and follows it into Bowes
If you would like to try a route not walked since 2003 you can get in touch with us using the Contact Page of our website and you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPX routes here.
The image for this post might look a bit strange but it was taken looking over Abbey Bridge on the River Tees, which is just to the east of Barnard Castle. One of the walking groups was taking a break under the bridge.
