Old Felton to Weldon Bridge – 21 December 2019
Well, it’s come round again, another year, another last walk. Twenty-six Saturdays over the course of the year and a lot of mileage covered by the coach in getting the groups to the start of each route. The number of routes we have done over the course of the year is 88 and members came out over 900 times with a lot of mileage covered by those members getting around those routes.
Our last route of the year has changed since the 2019 programme was put together. We are now headed up the A1 road about 1.5 miles from Felton on a minor road and walking a circular route back towards Felton and westwards under the A1 to follow the River Coquet around to Weldon Bridge and the finish at the Anglers Arms. To get everybody to the finish in time for the buffet at the Anglers Arms there is only one route of 9.5 miles
Our start on the minor road just off the A1 is at a memorial to Admiral Horatio Nelson who died a the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The memorial was erected by his friend Alexander Davison who owned an estate at Swarland just to the west of the memorial. When it was erected it was on the line of the original A1 called the Great North Road but changes to the alignment of the road over the years have left the memorial rather isolated and partially hidden in a stand of trees.
Next years programme is now available from the front page of the web site but you can also download it here. The first walk is on the 4th January to Bamburgh and if you fancy coming out with us you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page. If you are out with us for the last walk of the year you can download the walk description here and the GPS route here.
The image for this post was taken during our last visit of the year in 2014 when we walked from Amble to Weldon Bridge.
This is just a short video showing an image from the last 25 walks on our 2019 programme. The images were taken by the members of the club and are included with others on the Gallery page of this website. Although it has sometimes felt that we have been walking in the rain and mud especially recently it is surprising how many of the image have blue sky and sunshine. Hopefully, there will be many more like these in 2020.
