Armathwaite to Langwathby – 29 September 2018

Well, here’s an unusual one. When we put the programme together last year someone suggested the village of Langwathby as a finish, okay but where do we start from? Well, we could come down the M6 from Carlisle and turn off at the A6 junction and get to Armathwaite. So here we are in September and its time for the walk and we start looking for routes only to find that locating four possible routes is going to be difficult. In the end, we managed to get four routes but they all run together. We also have to get to Armathwaite to start the routes which is going to be an adventure in itself while driving down minor roads in quite a large coach, but I am sure we will make it.

The longest route, which is the 13.5-mile route starts in Armathwaite heads generally south-east through Kirkoswald and Glassonby and passes by the stone circle of Long Meg and her Daughters before heading down to Little Salkeld and the finish at Langwathby.  The 12-mile and 11-mile routes follow the same direction but their starting places are further along the minor road after leaving Armthwaite. The 7-mile route takes a slightly different direction and starts from Eden Bridge where it crosses the River Eden on the B6413 road. This route follows the east side of the River Eden and goes past Lacy’s Caves and the old mine workings of Longmeg Mine, after Little Salkeld this route also follows the same direction as the other three routes.

Back in 2015 we walked from Hartside to Melmerby, the pub was closed at Melmerby and we finished instead at Ousby which is just to the east of Langwathby. On the way down to Ousby the image for this post was taken, away in the distance you can just make out the edge of the Lake District but somewhere out there in the valley are the routes leading to the village by the long ford.

Autumn is coming closer and the trees are beginning to change colour. Now might be a great time to come out for a walk in the Eden Valley you can always contact us or you can find the walk descriptions here and the GPS routes here.
