Heddon-on-the-Wall to Wylam – 7 December 2024

After walking in the snow on some tough routes last week, it might be nice to do something a little less arduous this time. So it’s a walk along the river for all three routes this Saturday. The river is the River Tyne, and all the routes will start no more than half an hour after our last pickup, we are that close to home.

The first route to start is the 10.5-mile route that will head down to the river along Walbottle Dean and through Newburn. The route then heads west along the river, crosses it at Hagg Bank Bridge and walks on the southern side as far as Ovingham Bridge. The route then turns inland towards the 12th-century Prudhoe Castle and continues east to re-cross Hagg Bank Bridge and  walks along the riverside to cross Wylam Bridge to the finish.

The 9-mile route is second to start and goes south just to the west of Throckley, heading towards the river and the River Tyne Trail. At Stephenson’s Cottage, this route joins the 10.5-mile route for the remainder of the route

The last to start is the 9.5-mile route, which heads south to the river via Heddon-on-the-Wall and Close House Golf Club. Unlike the other two routes, this one goes east along the river and crosses Newburn Bridge before turning west on the south side of the river. At Clara Vale, the route turns south and heads towards the edge of Crawcrook before turning north through Bradley Gardens and the finish at Wylam.

Three nice walks along the river and a bit more added in. A quick drop-off on the way out and we will be back on the coach and away home before it gets too dark. You can get in touch with us from our Contact Page, you can also download the walk descriptions below and the GPS routes here.
