Keswick Routes – 25 May 2024
With a trip to the lakes and a finish at Keswick this time there are three completely different choices of route. Two routes start very near to each other on the A66 road on the way to Keswick while a third route starts in Keswick.
Both the 9-mile route and an 8-mile route start near Scales on the A66 road. The 8-mile route is going north and is going to climb Blencathra which at 868 meters is one of the highest hills in the northern part of the Lakes. From the top of Blencathra, the route heads southwest down to the Blencathra Centre and then along the disused railway path into Keswick.
The 9-mile route goes southwest from the start, following the River Glenderamackin as far as Threlkeld Bridge. From here the route goes south to the Youth Centre between Low Rigg and High Rigg and then west to cross the A591 road at Nest Brow. The last part of this route goes down to the lakeside of Derwent Water and finishes by coming around the lake into Keswick.
The last route is an 8-mile route that starts and finishes in Keswick. It goes around the lake the opposite way to the 9-mile route and then goes south to Ashness Bridge. This route continues south following Watendlath Beck until it reaches Watendlath Farm. From the farm, the route starts to climb west out of the valley heading towards the Borrowdale Valley with a choice of finishing at Rosthwaite or going north over Grange Fell to finish at Grange. With buses going up and down the Borrowdale road every half hour there will be a quick ride on the bus back to Keswick from either Rosthwaite or Grange.
