Chopgate to Helmsley – 27 April 2019
This is now two out of five trips to the North Yorkshire Moors that we are doing in 2019. The last one was four weeks ago when we finished in Pickering on a lovely sunny day, the image for this post is from that day. Notice the t-shirts on display but sadly no shorts just yet. The last time we did these routes was in November 2016 and while it was quite clear in the valley, up on the top on the east side of the valley there was a fog so dense that visibility was down to about 5 meters. It made for some difficult navigation.
Our final trip to the North Yorkshire Moors is again in November when we are visiting Saltburn on the coast. It is doubtful anyone will be in t-shirts and shorts that day but for this trip, we may be okay.
We have four walks walking east and west of the B1257 road as it passes through Chopgate, the 8 and 10-mile routes are on the west side and the 11 and 12-mile routes are on the east side. On the west side, there is a possibility of looking down on Rievaulx Abbey from Ashberry Wood. When we have been this way previously it has been practically impossible because of the thickness of the wood. In November 2016 there were some quite good views but it is interesting to see that in a book published in 1914, A History of the County of York North Riding the author quotes that some of the trees might be removed with advantage. Well, 105 years later the woodsmen are still to arrive but at least in April, the leaves will not be fully open.
