The First Big One

Ravenstonedale to Tebay – 28 April 2018

The walk at the end of March to Hesket Newmarket was supposed to be the first major hill climb of this year but poor visibility and icy rain prevented us from climbing any hills so it’s this one that is going to be the first big one of the year. We last did these routes on a bright sunny day in June 2013 and just to entice you out on this Saturday here are a few images from one of the routes.

The last time out there were only three routes but this time around we have added a fourth route of 7-miles. This route starts on the north side of the A685 road and goes west until the route goes under the M6 motorway where it heads south and comes back under the motorway just to the west of Tebay.

The 11-mile route starts to the east of Ravenstonedale and generally keeps to the south of the A685 road and on the edge of the lower slopes of the Howgills. The 12.5 and 13-mile routes start a mile apart on the A685 road with the 13-mile route getting off first. Both routes climb slowly south along separate ridges to reach The Calf which is the highest hill in the Howgill range at 676 meters. From The Calf both routes head northwest on the same route into Tebay.

After leaving The Calf the two longer routes pass over a hill called Bush Howe, On the flanks of this hill is the Black Horse of Bush Howe, It is a horse like figure set into the scree on the slopes of Bush Howe. Although we looked for it the last time we were there no one could pick it out. So hopefully, this time around we will get to see it.

Now, if you were to come out with us and come on one of the long walks perhaps another pair of eyes just might help us to locate this elusive Black Horse. If you would like to join us for a walk, a long one or a short one you can get in touch on the Contact Page and you can find the route descriptions here and the GPS routes here.
