Runswick Bay to Saltburn-by-the-Sea
It’s our last trip to the seaside for 2019 and we are off to North York Moors coastline with the great big cliffs and the crashing sea. We have only been to the coast once this year and that was in September when we walked from Lealholm to Staithes and oddly enough that was a North York Moors visit. Next year is about the same as well because we only have two coastal walks, the first being in January to Bamburgh and the second in July to Dunbar. Just in case you would like to see the rest of next years programme you can download a copy from here or from the front page of the website.
For this trip we only have two walks available, the longest route is 12-miles and goes from Runswick Bay all along the coast to the finish in Saltburn. This route follows the Cleveland Way which starts in Helmsley and makes it way over the moors in some 57 miles to Saltburn. From Saltburn, the Cleveland Way goes right along the coast to finish in Filey another 53 miles away. So this route is running along the first section of the coastline of the Cleveland Way and while it might be in the opposite direction to the official start it still has the spectacular scenery of the high cliffs along this section of the coast.
The second route is 10.5-miles and starts on the A174 road no far from the Boulby Potash Mine and also heads along the coast following the Cleveland Way. At Skinningrove this route leaves the coast and picks up a marked route called Cleveland Street. Cleveland Street start in Guisborough and heads towards the coast but turns west just before Skinningrove to finish in Loftus. The length of Cleveland Street is about 11 miles and was probably an old pedestrian route linking the priories of Guisborough and Whitby. The 10.5-mile route follows Cleveland Street as far inland as North Skelton but then heads north through the village of Skelton and the woods beside Skelton Beck to emerge on the coast again at Saltburn.
If you would like a last trip to the seaside, especially on the North York Moors you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page and you can download the walk descriptions here and the GPS routes here.
The image for this post was taken the last time we walked along the coast on the North York Moors on a rather windy day in February 2014. The image was taken just after leaving Skinningrove where the path climbs back from the beach to the cliff tops.
