Swainby to Chop Gate – 17 August 2019

We are planning to finish in Chop Gate this time around. There has always been some discussion on how the place should be pronounced, with many people going for the pronunciation Chop Yat. But if you check out the website TeessideLive you will see that the locals actually pronounce it as Chop Gate. We will just leave it to you to decide how to pronounce it and it does not really matter, all we want is the place to be nice and sunny when we arrive.

After the last walk where we only had two walks out, we have gone one better this time around and have three walks on offer. The first route getting off the coach is an 11.5-mile route that is starting from Ingleby Arncliffe. This route goes anti-clockwise to the south passing through Osmotherly and then heading back northeast over Arnsgill Ridge.

The 11-mile route gets off the coach next just past Swainby on the A172 road and goes clockwise along the Cleveland Way past the Wainstones and then going south at Clay Bank. The third route is a 6-mile route that gets off at the top of Clay Bank and head up and past the Wainstones before  also heading south to Chop Gate.

The image for this post was taken on our last walk into the Scottish Borders at Langholm on a really nice sunny day. We had not been to Langholm since 2008 and the last time we finished at Chop Gate was 2009 although we have passed by a number of times when we were visiting the North York Moors.

If you fancy a walk into Chop Gate or even Chop Yat you can get in touch on our contact page and you can download the walk descriptions here and the GPS routes here.
