Braithwaite to Cockermouth – 15 September 2018

September 11, 2010, was the last time we were in Cockermouth and between that date and May 2003 we visited a total of four times. So quite a gap between our last visit and the one coming up. However, because the main route comes in from the direction of Keswick on the A66 road there are a limited number of places where the groups can drop-off the coach and get a reasonable mileage for a walk, consequently all the previous trips to Cockermouth have used the same routes and there is no exception this time around.

If you fancy a fairly long strenuous route how about a walk over Grisedale Pike from Braithwaite? The route is about 12 miles long and the highest point is 791 meters but it is all downhill from there. For something a little less strenuous there is an 11-mile route that climbs alongside Beckstones Gill to reach the top of a hill called Barf with Lords Seat at 552 meters a short way further along. Just after the start, the route passes a white painted stone called The Clerk and quite near the top there is another white painted stone called The Bishop.

For something a little easier how about the 10-mile route that stays pretty much on the level and cuts around the north of the fells and then heads west to pick up a route beside the River Cocker. This is something the other two routes do as well, with all three routes coming into Cockermouth alongside the river.

The image for this post was taken on one of our previous visits to the Lake District and shows, in the distance and in line with the fence post, the route up Beckstones Gill for the 10-mile walk. For those with eagle eyes, you may just be able to spot The Bishop on the high ground to the right of the gill.

If you fancy a walk to the west of the Lakes you can find the walk descriptions here and the GPS routes here.
