Lealholm to Staithes – 28 September 2019

We have two more trips to the North York Moors left on our programme for this year and both of them involve a trip to the seaside. This one is a trip to Staithes followed in late November to a visit to Saltburn. Staithes used to have a large fishing port with as many as 80 fishing vessels working out of the harbour.  Today the village is best known as a popular tourist destination and as a stopover for walkers on the Cleveland Way path.

Our three walks all start at Lealholm Side which is about one mile north of the village of Lealholm. All three walks are going to head north towards the coast with the 10-mile walk taking the most direct route north to Ellerby and then on to Runswick Bay before heading west along the coast using the Cleveland Way until reaching Staithes.

The 11.5-mile route goes north-west at the start over Lealholm Moor and crosses the A171 road to the west side of Scaling Reservoir. From there the route heads north to cross the A174 road close to Boulby Potash Mine and then east on the Cleveland way to Staithes. This walk is the only one of the three routes that has to climb the hill from the harbour up to the car park.

The 12.5-mile route also crosses Lealholm Moor but goes over the A171 road to the east of Scaling Reservoir. The route then heads towards Ellerby and Runswick Bay and also comes into Staithes using the Cleveland Way.

Do you fancy a trip to the seaside, or a walk along the coast heading towards Staithes if so you can get in touch with us from our Contact Page and you can download the walk descriptions here and the GPS routes here.

The image for this post four years ago in 2015 when we last walked these routes. The image was taken as one of the groups reached Danby Beacon on Beacon Hill not long after leaving the start at Lealholm Side.
